What is happening with the Somerville branch?
The Somerville branch at 35 West End Avenue is now closed. The final day for in-person services was Friday, July 31, 2026. Our goal is to restore services in a new location as soon as possible. Programming and events have moved to local partner venues around downtown Somerville. Book and materials pickups have shifted to the Bridgewater branch.
Why did this happen?
Prior to the closure, Somerville staff experienced health symptoms consistent with those exhibited before the August 2025 closure, when mold was identified in the lower level of the building. After the consolidation of the main floor in October 2025, the reduced footprint significantly limited our ability to meet the needs of patrons. As a result, we were already exploring the possibility of a new location—a process that was accelerated by the need to protect staff health.
What happens next?
We are actively searching for a suitable new location within Somerville to restore full-service, in-person operations as soon as possible. All Somerville patrons continue to have full access to digital resources, online databases, and e-books, as well as physical collections across all other branches.
What about the staff and books?
Somerville staff are now based out of the Bridgewater branch while continuing to deliver local programming and outreach services within Somerville. Materials are being moved out of the Somerville location and stored at another branch until a new site in Somerville is secured.
What will happen to the building?
We have vacated the library space within the building. The property is owned by the Borough, so all decisions regarding the future of the building fall strictly under the municipality.
