SCLSNJ provides storytimes as a core service to foster early literacy, community engagement, and lifelong learning. Storytimes are interactive, educational programs where a trained library workers reads books, sing songs, and engages children and their caregivers in early literacy activities.
Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) serves as the foundation for all of SCLSNJ's Storytime programs. ECRR is a research-based early literacy initiative developed by the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children. It focuses on empowering caregivers and libraries to foster key early literacy skills—talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing—which are critical for children’s success in school and life.
SCLSNJ has many resources that will enhance your child's early literacy in addition to attending Storytimes at our locations.
SCLSNJ offers hundreds of librarian-curated Storytime Theme Kits, each featuring a collection of books thoughtfully centered around a specific theme. Check out a storytime them kit at one of our library branches today!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is an early literacy initiative that encourages caregivers to read 1,000 books with their children before they start kindergarten. The program is designed to promote reading readiness, language development, and a love of books in young children.
Tumblebooks Library is an easy-to-use resource of animated talking picture books, chapter books, videos, non-fiction titles, playlists, graphic novels, and math stories.
Play at the library
SCLSNJ’s library branches offer toys and materials for engaging imagination and language through dramatic play for use while visiting the branch. Branches offer a variety of educational toys – from puzzles, to games and craft centers.
