Calling all artists! Enter the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s (SCLSNJ) Library Card Design contest to have your art featured on a special, limited edition library card.
The competition will launch on March 5 with entries accepted until March 24. The winning artwork will be featured on limited edition Library cards, which will be available Summer 2018 while supplies last.
"The Library card art contest will help us to engage the silent members of our communities, those who walk quietly through the world but who are capable of vast creativity and artistic expression,” said Alana Danois, library assistant. “We'll also see something of those who wear their art with gusto, who cannot sit still without doodling or who take dramatic photos wherever they go. And if there is one thing all of our communities can benefit from, it is sharing our ideas and passions through art.”
The design must incorporate books and/or reading and consist of original artwork. There will be two categories: Children (birth - 12) and Teen/Adult (13 - adult). There will be one winner chosen from each category.
"What better way for artists of all ages and abilities to display their love of reading and libraries than through our Library Card Art Contest?” said Jenna Galley, youth services librarian.
"We have so many talented patrons, we can't wait to see how they express their shared love of reading by entering an original design in the library card art contest,” said Christine Jansen, young adult librarian.
All eligible entries will be posted on SCLSNJ’s Facebook page, facebook.com/SCLSNJ, for online voting from April 9-22. You may also vote in person, call your local branch, or email your name and vote to designcontest@sclibnj.org.
The top 10 entries from each category will move on to the second round, where they will be voted on by a panel of judges on April 25. One winner from each age category will be chosen. The artwork from the nine runners-up in each category will be made into bookmarks, which will be available at all 10 SCLSNJ branches.
There will be an award reception for the top 20 fan favorite designs, hosted at the Hillsborough Library branch, located at 379 South Branch Road in Hillsborough, on May 19 from 2-5 p.m.
“The Library card art contest is just one more way that SCLSNJ helps community members connect with one another and share their talents,” said Jessica Trujillo, youth services manager.
