In the urban biography, "The Neighborhood Manhattan Forgot: Audubon Park and the Families Who Shaped It", author, historian, and neighborhood activist Matthew Spady delves deep into the lives of the two families—the Audubons and the Grinnells—whose land ownership and personal choices led to the distinct footprint that defines today’s Audubon Park Historic District.
Beginning with John James Audubon’s purchase of fourteen acres of farmland, the narrative follows the many twists and turns of the area’s path from forest to city, culminating in the twenty-first century with the Audubon name re-purposed in today’s historic district in the southwestern corner of Washington Heights.
Join him in this presentation to learn how he combed through decades of records to piece together Audubon Park’s complex history and helped preserve the area’s rich architecture through landmarking at the city, state, and national levels.
