Watchung Regional High School Students to Teach Introductory Computer Coding Class

Interested in learning the fundamentals of programming? Python is a simple way to get an introduction to coding basics.
On September 27 and on October 25 from 7-8 p.m., members of the Watchung Regional High School Computer Science Club will teach an introductory computer programming class at the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s Warren Township Library branch, located at 42 Mountain Boulevard.
The Coding With Python workshop is a foundational class for students in grades 6-8. The program will provide an introduction to computer science through various projects and learning exercises. Attendees will learn the basics of while/for loops, variables, and program structure.
“The reason for this series is that the classroom has already been transformed through technology such as SmartBoards. But, the tools teachers use to teach remain the same. We want to bring education into the 21st century at all levels,” said Neelay Trivedi, a high school junior who spearheaded the idea for the program. “Computer science education often starts at the high school level, but I want to change that by exposing younger students to coding so that they have more time to learn about it and gain project-based experience.”
Participants will gain experience with object-oriented programming through hands on learning. The unique aspect of the workshop is the project-based focus. This program will be taught in the form of meaningful, real-life projects such as: websites, apps, and algorithms.
The class will be taught by Trivedi with assistance from Peter Linder, a Watchung Regional High School junior and fellow member of the Watchung Regional High School Computer Science Club.
"Coding is becoming more and more prominent today and I'm happy to have enthusiastic students willing to share their talents with us to teach more kids about this up-and-coming field,” said Katie Bojanek, youth services librarian at SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch.
