On September 16, second grader Samantha Rafalowski read to Bella, a visiting therapy dog, at the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) Hillsborough branch.
Rafalowski read "There Is a Bird On Your Head!" by Mo Willems. Bella gave the book two paws, a "woofing" good read.
"This program supports the community by providing a safe and welcoming space for a reluctant reader to feel comfortable reading aloud," said Mary Nunn, youth services library assistant. "Studies have shown that reading to dogs is a great way to improve self-confidence and public speaking skills - it provides an opportunity to speak out loud, but without the judgement of human company. Plus, it's super fun for the kids, adults, and staff."
Many SCLSNJ branches participate in the read to the therapy dog program. To explore these programs, visit sclsnj.libnet.info/events.
The Hillsborough branch is located at 379 South Branch Road in Hillsborough. To connect with the branch, call (908) 458-8420 or email hillsborough@sclibnj.org. To discover all SCLSNJ has to offer, visit SCLSNJ.org or connect with SCLSNJ on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.
