Book review by Amy Atzert, collection development librarian
Delphine Auber didn’t grow up with her father, but she certainly knew his name. Who doesn’t recognize the name of the literary giant Ernest Hemingway? Her mother Sylvie was once a friend to writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald, those that made Paris the center of their activities in the 1920s. Delphine’s greatest desire in life is to be a writer just like Hemingway. For now though Delphine’s reality is taking care of Sylvie whose alcoholism has stunted their lives.
When a devastating shift in Delphine’s life occurs it fuels her conviction of finding her famous father. She connects with past friends of her mother’s and sets off for New York. Through those friends Delphine is able to locate Hemingway’s whereabouts and travels to Cuba in hopes of making her dreams a reality.
A coming of age story whose main character against the odds finds a way to move towards her life goals. What she couldn’t know and predict is how all the people she meets, and places she travels, will shape her future life. A swift moving and entertaining story that will have the reader rooting for its engaging protagonist.
