“The Summer Pact” by Emily Giffin

About Blog Post Aug 7, 2024 by SCLSNJ Staff
The Summer Pact” by Emily Giffin Review by Amy Atzert, collection development librarian Lainey, Tyson, Hannah and Summer may not seem to have much in common but that doesn’t keep them from becoming the best of friends when they meet in college. Hannah, a southern girl with a quiet and gentle demeanor; Lainey, a beautiful party girl from the West Coast; Tyson, intelligent, driven and studying to be a lawyer; and Summer, a gifted athlete and leader of the group. As graduation approaches they each feel the pressures of life beyond college – maybe more than they each realize. When a horrible tragedy occurs, the friends make a pact that they will never let each other struggle with life issues alone. Ten years pass and once again they get more heartbreaking news. True to their word they drop everything in their regular lives and run  to help each other with no questions asked. Each other’s support may be the difference between lasting sorrow or a hopeful future. I have read and enjoyed several books by Emily Giffin, and this one is no exception. I am a sucker for stories where friends from different backgrounds, cultures, and points of view develop lasting relationships. The stories where they each learn something from those exact differences and grow as people. Yes, these characters are dealing with serious issues like grief and infidelity but are managing through it with support from each other, humor and authenticity.
