“The God of the Woods” by Liz Moore
Review by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
I loved the author’s last book, “Long Bright River,” so I was excited to read her next, especially with all the great reviews preceding its release. I was not disappointed and I’m already looking forward to the next book.
It’s August 1975 and Barbara Van Laar was not in her bunk at sunrise. The entire summer camp in the Adirondacks is on high alert. Especially since this is not the first time a Van Laar child disappeared here. Her brother went missing over a decade ago and no trace of him was ever found.
The story unfolds with multiple perspectives over a number of decades (helpfully noted at the beginning of each chapter) to puzzle out what happened to both Van Laar children. I especially liked the viewpoint of the first female detective in the State Police and what life was like for her in the 1970s. Theories abound, secrets are revealed, and nothing is as it seems on the surface.

Blaire Calloway has left her food truck behind to finally open her dream bar: Buttercream and Booze. Her throwback 1950s pinup style, and decadent cupcakes and cocktails, makes her Seattle bar an instant favorite. Too bad about the competition next door: The Knight Cap run by Ronan Knight -- a complete pain in the butt. His lumberjack style of plaid flannel Every. Single. Day. is enough to annoy her but the loud thumping bass of his bands and the constant TWAK of the axe throwing is about to drive her over the edge. When competition threatens both businesses Blaire and Ronan join forces to attract customers -- but what about the growing attraction between the two rivals?
Full confession: not a fan of books with cupcakes and bakeries. They are usually too saccharine for my tastes (see what I did there?) but this book also had beer and hot wings so I decided to give it a chance. I LOVED it. There are sweet bites, steamy bites and even semi-pornographic cupcake bites; this is a book you’ll want to savor but just like a great meal it’ll be over too quickly. This is my first book by this author and I can’t wait to dig into her backlist.
