The Divorcées” by Rowan Beaird Book Review by Amy Atzert, collection development librarian It’s Reno, Nevada, in the 1950s when Lois Saunders arrives at the Golden Yarrow Ranch. She left a loveless marriage and wants to put it behind her. Staying here for six weeks is the only requirement to get a quickie divorce. Rita, the owner, and her second in command, Bailey, keep watch over the women in residence. They supply them with a roof over their heads, food on the table, horses to ride, and a semblance of peace. When Lois arrives she is not sure what to expect. What will the other women be like? Will they want to know all of the messy details that landed her here? It is only when Greer Lange arrives that Lois feels a genuine connection to any of the women. Greer is so different from the other women – strong, unapologetic and mysterious. She is especially different from Lois who is always nervous and easily intimidated. Unbeknownst to the other women Lois and Greer develop a close relationship. They go out to the casinos together and dream about plans for the future. Plans to grab the life they both deserve after divorce. To that end, Lois comes up with a crazy scheme to get a lot of cash. Greer loves the idea and makes all the plans to carry it out. As the day of the big plan draws closer Greer begins to act distant. The more she does, the more Lois begins to panic that they are making a huge mistake. A mistake that could land them both in a lot of serious trouble. Can Lois really trust her? Historical yes, but also thriller. The women will pique your interest, capture your curiosity, and keep you turning the pages. Friendship and deception abound in this novel. The divorce ranch phenomenon came to life in the 1930s when Nevada relaxed its divorce laws and although resorts like these eventually fizzled out, using it as the backdrop of the story brings a new twist.
