Starling House” by Alix E. Harrow Review by by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian Need a good gothic read with a haunted house and creatures lurking in the fog? Of course you do! The town of Eden simply seems cursed. Accidents happen here more than anywhere else, but could it just be because of the mine? And whatever the mine is releasing into the water, the air, and maybe the people…? Or did the mine get dug too deep and things that should never have been allowed to walk the surface suddenly have a way here? One thing is for sure. Nowhere in Eden seems more cursed than the crumbling mansion behind the tall wrought iron gates: Starling House. The former residence of the author of a perennial classic creepy children's book, her tale seems to be based on the house and town, and a fictional land underneath the town known as The Underland. Opal has always loved the book and been intrigued by the old house but if anyone is cursed it’s her family. She’s been raising her brother best she can and barely scraping by for years. Then, she has a need to go to the house and becomes the first person to see the caretaker in years. He seems odd, but nice, and he’s obviously in need of help, so she finds herself the cleaner of Starling House. But could the house want her there for other reasons? Part gothic romance, part character study, part family saga, part dark faery tale, this book is the perfect read for dark and gloomy nights. Those who aren’t typically fans of the otherworldly in their fiction may also enjoy getting lost in this mining town and exploring its mysteries alongside the interesting residents.
