According to the Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) “more than two thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event by age 16.” In response to such statistics, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) will host trauma informed care workshops at three branches this October.
“With such a large percentage of our population having experienced trauma, it is important to understand the lifelong impacts those experiences may have,” said Darryl Voorhees, SCLSNJ manager of adult services programming and collaborations. “Supporting and promoting lifelong learning is one of SCLSNJ’s core services.”
Tracey Heisler, executive director from CASA SHaW, will discuss what developmental trauma is; how it changes children's brains; the challenges that traumatized children and adults often have; and strategies to help them.
