SCLSNJ to Celebrate 100 Years of Women's Suffrage in 2020

About Blog Post Feb 18, 2020 by Pressroom
On August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment was ratified and women were granted the right to vote in the United States. This year, marks the 100 year anniversary of this landmark event in history. During March, discover a century of women’s suffrage and more during Women’s History Month with the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ). During the month-long celebration, SCLSNJ will showcase the achievements of women by sharing the stories of monumental women, by exploring the history of women through programs, and by maintaining an ever-expanding literary collection. “Throughout 2020, American women from coast to coast will be celebrating 100 years of having the right to vote by sharing stories of fearless women whether discussing Alice Paul, Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, or someone a little closer to home - like your mother. Our Libraries are proud to do the same. Our branches will be presenting incredible, informative, and well-researched programs; while our librarians will be ready to help you find that next, perfect, inspirational read.” said SCLSNJ’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations Carolann DeMatos. “I will be surrounding myself with all my favorite female authors this year - Colette, Alcott, Phillips, Wells, White, Wharton, Atwood, Brown, Hamann - and then once I am done re-reading all my favorites, I will be calling a librarian colleague to help me discover something new and fantastic.” Since 1987, the United States has recognized March as Women’s History Month. The observation aims to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of females throughout time. Modern public libraries have been the home of a number of recognized contributions of women throughout the 1900s. “I love being part of a profession that has a rich history of strong women in leadership positions, from Theresa West Elmendorf, the first female president of the American Library Association in 1911, to Henriette Avram, who led development in the 1960s of the data standard that every library catalog in the world still uses, to our current Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden,” said SCLSNJ Director of Operations Lynn Hoffman. “Carrying on that tradition is a privilege.” SCLSNJ’s catalog features titles from some of the most famous female authors of all time from Virginia Woolf to Danielle Steel; biographies of the most prominent females in history; and so much more.  “Our collection is a celebration of women in itself,” said SCLSNJ Collection Development Manager Yvonne Selander. “There were a number of exciting biographies and memoirs published in 2019 that feature the stories of some of the most interesting women in the world. From the memories of iconic musician and poet Patti Smith, to the secrets of a female World War II spy, there is something for any interest.” Explore the best women's memoirs and biographies of 2019, compiled by our expert librarians: In addition to the collection, Library customers will have the opportunity to explore live reenactments of Alice Paul and Louisa May Alcott; attend lectures about Amelia Earthart and Harriet Beecher Stowe; and view a screening of the film “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler.”  Celebrate Women at the Library  Votes for Women: Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage  Meet Lucretia Coffin Mott: Quaker Minister, Abolitionist, and Suffragist
