SCLSNJ Receives $1000 Grant Sponsored by Grow With Google to Assist Job Seekers in Somerset County

The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) has been selected to receive a grant to participate in Libraries Lead with Digital Skills, an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) and the Public Library Association (PLA), sponsored by Grow with Google. The grant, in the amount of $1,000, will be used to support funding for programs that will assist job seekers in Somerset County find or prepare for work.
According to recent data from nj.gov, the unemployment rate in the County is 2.5 percent. This program series aims to connect Library customers to the evolving economy through technology-based courses that focus on Google tools.
"We are so excited that SCLSNJ has been selected to receive the Libraries Lead with Digital Skills grant,” said Jennifer Sulligan, adult services librarian. “The funding will help us ensure that our community has ongoing access to tools and resources that can help them build on their skills and grow in their careers. This important initiative addresses three of SCLSNJ's core services: promoting and supporting lifelong learning; providing technology access and expertise that meet the needs of the community; and creating opportunities that build Somerset County’s economic and workforce development to ensure our community's workers are ready for today's employment needs."
The programs, which are slated to begin in March, will include livestream classes with Google employees; interactive workshops that will introduce G Suite and Google search capabilities; and more.
In addition to these programs, the Library System provides supplemental support services including job readiness skills such as interview skills and job search assistance; and basic computer skills in small group and one-on-one settings.
