“Sandwich” by Catherine Newman
Review by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
It’s time for Rocky and her family to head to the beach house in Sandwich, Mass., for their annual summer vacation. The kids may be young adults now, but the decades-old tradition continues. The addition of her son’s long-time girlfriend is more than welcome, and Rocky is even looking forward to her parents’ arrival. As always when seven people, and one dog, share a small home and one bathroom for a while, secrets cannot be kept secret for long.
Struggling with the “joys” of menopause, Rocky tries to control her unwelcome mood swings and hot flashes while enjoying being around her family and trying not to stress out too much about her parents getting older, her children becoming adults and the decisions she made long ago. A lighthearted telling dealing with the serious topics of being in the Sandwich Generation.
