Next time you visit the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) North Plainfield branch, make sure to visit Roscoe - their new snake. Don't worry, no need to be scared, Roscoe is not poisonous. In fact, Roscoe is a Rock Snake, created one rock link at a time through a community-based art project.
"Roscoe the Rock Snake helps welcome all visitors to the Library," said Crystal Hooper, branch manager. "It's exciting to see the community support and enthusiasm to make Roscoe grow."
Roscoe grows each time a community member paints a rock to add to the growing chain. The rock might be painted abstractly, or perhaps feature a vegetable or an animal, or sometimes the rock is decorated in celebration of a season. Each rock is a unique and special work of art, celebrated and appreciated by NPNJROCKS - the group responsible for fostering this cooperative art project.

NPNJROCKS (North Plainfield, New Jersey Rocks) began in 2017 as a friendly way to practice random acts of kindness. Founded by Melissa Stevens, a local preschool teacher and children's author, NPNJROCKS continued to grow over the years - especially during the difficult COVID years - and soon slithered its way to the North Plainfield branch.
Roscoe the Rock Snake has already tripled in size. Community members of all ages are asked to help paint rocks throughout the year as a way to add to this loveable snake.
The North Plainfield branch is located at 6 Rockview Avenue in North Plainfield. For more information, call (908) 458-8435 or email northplainfield@sclibnj.org. To discover all SCLSNJ has to offer, visit SCLSNJ.org or connect with SCLSNJ on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), or YouTube.
