“Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk” by Kathleen Hanna
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
Kathleen Hanna, former frontwoman of Bikini Kill, recounts her origins as one of leaders of the Riot Grrrl movement in the 1990s. Hanna chronicles her tumultuous childhood and coming of age in the Pacific Northwest, in which art, spoken word, and music fueled her creativity. In the process, she battled back against the violence and misogyny that women, particularly those in the punk music scene, faced.
This is a visceral and raw memoir that equally examines the inroads Hanna was able to make as a long-time advocate for women as well the missteps that were made along the way. She delves into many notable relationships from that time, including those with her bandmates, Kurt Cobain, Joan Jett and Adam Horovitz of Beastie Boys’ fame, who she eventually marries. Hanna is candid and unflinching in all aspects of her writing and will grip readers from the first few pages.
