“Raiders of the Lost Heart” by Jo Segura
Review by by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
Dr. Socorro "Corrie" Mejía has always wanted to lead an archaeological expedition to find the remains of her Aztec ancestor Chimalli. When she gets the plea from an old friend to help the stalled expedition he’s on to find Chimalli she’s disappointed it’s not her dig but thrilled to be there all the same. Until her rival, the man who broke her heart in college, turns out to be the lead archaeologist: Dr. Ford Matthews. Can the two work together to find the greatest Aztec discovery in decades? Can they do it without falling in love?
Think of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones rolled together and split in two and you’ll have our two protagonists. Both are brilliant yet Ford is the book smart one and Corrie is the daring adventurer. She is notorious in the archaeological world for her escapades. However, she could easily leave the notoriety behind, what she really wants is the respect of the academic world, something that this discovery could lead to if only they can work together to find it. There is history here and Ford has more than one stressor acting against him, but you root for these two every step of the way.
Fans of Ali Hazelwood’s strong, smart heroines and spicy scenes have another book to add to their TBR pile.
