October Is Family History Month
Created by Bob Helmbrecht, collection development librarian
Have you been thinking about starting to work on your family tree? October is Family History Month, so it's a great time to start!
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced researcher, the Library has some excellent online resources to help you with your genealogy research during Family History Month, and throughout the year.
All of these resources except for ProQuest Ancestry Library Edition are available to access online from home.
- HeritageHub (Formerly America’s Obituaries)
U.S. obituaries and death notices for in-depth genealogical research from 1704-today. HeritageHub helps you easily identify relatives, uncover new information and potentially unknown family members. Includes deep coverage from all 50 states, hard-to-find content from the mid 1900’s, and original obituary images.
- ProQuest Ancestry Library Edition (only available on-site in our Library branches)
Access billions of names in thousands of genealogical databases including Census and Vital Records, birth, marriage and death notices, the Social Security Death Index, Passenger lists and naturalizations, Military and Holocaust Records, City Directories, New York Emigrant Savings Bank records, and African American and Native American Records. Research aids may be found under the “Learning Center” drop-down.
Discover your family’s military past. With content from the Revolutionary War onward, Fold3 Library Edition is an invaluable research resource for historians, genealogists, researchers, military enthusiasts, veterans and their families, teachers, and battle reenactors.
Find unique primary sources, local and family histories, convenient research guides, and interactive census maps.
You’ll get access to newspapers, with coverage beginning as far back as 1785. Patrons can browse each edition as it was printed – including articles, photos, advertisements, obituaries, editorial cartoons and so much more. The State Collections are also cross-searchable with other ProQuest content.
