October Focus on Horror: Gerardo Sámano Córdova Created by Bob Helmbrecht, collection development librarian Our Focus on Horror author today is author Gerardo Sámano Córdova. The author’s debut novel, “Monstrilio,” was released in 2023. A grieving mother saves and nurtures a piece of her dead son’s lung. It survives, becomes a little “monstrilio,” then eventually into a doppelganger of her dead son. Can it really become a man, or will it always be a monster? It’s a great read for those looking for dark magic realism. The novel received a lot of great reviews, and showed up on quite a few "best books of 2023" lists. Writing in the Los Angeles Times, author Gabino Iglesias said of the novel "At once heartbreaking and unapologetically strange, this is a cross-cultural, syncretic, folksy, razor-sharp narrative about the horrors of grief and the eternal debate over nature versus nurture."   You can find some short stories and articles by Sámano Córdova on the author's website. Give them a read, then check out "Monstrilio" today!
