October Focus on Horror: Donyae Coles
Created by Bob Helmbrecht, collection development librarian
Our Focus on Horror author today is author Donyae Coles.
Coles' debut novel, "Midnight Rooms," was released in July. Set in England in 1840, a young biracial woman with no money or prospects unexpectedly receives an offer of marriage from a wealthy young man. After the marriage, she moves to his isolated estate, where things slowly take a dark turn.
“Publishers Weekly” said "Coles astounds in her atmospheric gothic debut." Author Laurel Hightower said of the novel: "Coles' deftly crafted heroine, Orabella, takes us along for a sweet and heavy fever dream of horror, with dark magic looming around every crumbling corner. A compelling story that won't let go--this is everything I wanted."
You can also find stories by Coles in a couple of anthologies in the Library's collections. "All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology" includes the story "Mother, Daughter, and the Devil." The author's novella "The House of the Heart" appears in the collection "A Conjuring for All Seasons: An Anthology of Witch Lore."
