SCLSNJ's North Plainfield Branch Unveils New Solar-Powered Outdoor Patio Space
The North Plainfield branch of the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) is thrilled to announce the installation of new, state-of-the-art outdoor patio furniture, including a solar-powered charging table, providing residents with a convenient and sustainable space to connect and engage with library resources.
This exciting addition was made possible by a generous bequest from Helen C. Marder, a long-time library volunteer, whose legacy continues to benefit the community. In 2024, the library’s management team held an internal idea contest to determine the best use of these funds. The winning proposals, selected for their innovative and community-focused approach, included a display case for the Montgomery branch and the solar-charging Wi-Fi patio furniture for North Plainfield.
“We are incredibly grateful for Helen C. Marder’s foresight and generosity,” said Brian Auger, SCLSNJ Library Director. “This new outdoor patio space, particularly the solar-powered charging table, directly addresses the modern needs of our patrons. It creates a welcoming environment where individuals of all ages can connect, explore, share and discover the library in a whole new way.”
The new outdoor area features two sets of durable, weather-resistant tables and seating. One set is equipped with integrated solar panels that power contactless charging pads for cell phones, as well as USB-A and USB-C ports for charging larger devices like tablets and laptops. The second set provides comfortable, standard patio seating. Both sets allow for access to the library’s Wi-Fi, extending digital resource access to the library’s outdoor space.
“The borough residents of North Plainfield have already embraced this new outdoor space,” said Crystal Hooper, North Plainfield Library Branch Manager. “It’s wonderful to see people of all ages utilizing the Wi-Fi and charging their devices while enjoying the outdoors, especially as the weather warms up. This initiative truly aligns with our commitment to providing accessible and sustainable resources to our community.”
SCLSNJ partnered with EnerFusion Inc. to ensure the patio furniture’s durability, ADA compliance, and environmental consciousness. EnerFusion’s expertise in creating long-lasting, sustainable outdoor solutions has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. The installation of the patio furniture was completed with the support of the North Plainfield Department of Public Works. The North Plainfield branch invites the community to experience the new solar-powered charging patio and enjoy the library’s expanded outdoor amenities.
