National Poetry Month: Cynthia Pelayo Created by Bob Helmbrecht, collection development librarian Our National Poetry Month poet for today is poet and novelist Cynthia Pelayo. Pelayo’s 2016 poetry collection, "Poems of My Night," was nominated for an Elgin Award for best full-length collection by the Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association. From the publisher Raw Dog Screaming Press’s description, "Pelayo constructs a narrative in her poetry in response to the work of Jorge Luis Borges that examines the themes and subsequent consequences of insomnia, death, and blindness." "Into the Forest and All the Way Through" was published in 2020 by Burial Day Books. This one also received an Elgin Award nomination, as well as one from the Bram Stoker Awards. It is a fascinating and disturbing collection of poems based on true crime cases of more than 100 hundred murdered or missing women. Writer Kealan Patrick Burke said of this collection: "This book shook me, ripped my heart out, and haunts me still…This is a vital collection." Pelayo's most recent collection was "Crime Scene," published in 2022 by Raw Dog Screaming Press. This book won the Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Poetry Collection in 2022. Author Eric LaRocca said of the collection: "Cynthia Pelayo dips her quill in a secret wound of pain that not all writers are brave enough to explore. Unflinching and raw, 'Crime Scene’ is a harrowing exploration of human suffering and firmly establishes Pelayo as one of the most exciting and original poets working today." Pelayo also writes novels and short fiction. Check out Cynthia Pelayo’s work today!
