Every month at the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) Montgomery branch, children in grades K-4 and their caregivers learn about a new artist, art movement, or art style during Ms. Natalie's Art Academy program.
In April, customers learned about Hayao Miyazaki and created Soot Sprite terrariums and Calcifer dishes. To further explore the works of this anime artist and director, check out our Binge Box: Studio Ghibli and view a collection of six Miyazaki films.
May's program will focus on Atsuko Nishida, a Japanese artist known for being an original character designer for Pokémon, including Pikachu. Some of her other credits include Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and some of the Eevee evolutions such as Glaceon and Sylveon.
"What makes Art Academy such a rewarding program is getting to further explore and share my enthusiasm for the art world with our customers," said Natalie Ehnis, youth services librarian. "I especially love introducing younger customers to lesser known artists, like the woman behind Pikachu, as well as alternative art mediums such as using coffee for watercolors or recycled bottle caps in collage."
Attendees will get to create their own Pokémon and design a jumbo trading card of their character to take home. The program will be hosted in person at the Montgomery branch on May 6 from 5:15-6 p.m. Learn more or register: https://sclsnj.libnet.info/event/9781274.
