“How to Age Disgracefully” by Clare Pooley
Review by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
The Senior Citizens' Social Club is off to an interesting start when part way through their first meeting the ceiling collapses and tragedy strikes. Not to be deterred, the seniors want to keep meeting but the community center is now in need of major repairs and the council is considering selling to a developer. But then how will the teenaged father be able to continue school without the affordable daycare at the center? Or the karate kids learn to kick? Or the pregnant ladies learn to breathe through their contractions? These seniors (and parents, and kids and pregnant ladies) are on a mission to save the center and along the way some may save themselves.
This is a laugh out loud romp that you had to expect from the author of “Iona Iverson’s Rules for Commuting” with unexpected friendships being the core of the novel. The novel starts with a busload of seniors and young kids being pulled over by the police and you spend the next ¾ of the book trying to figure out how they got there. It’s great fun with a lot of heart. If you need a pick me up then pick this one up!
