“Hornbeam All In” by Cynthia Rylant and Arthur Howard
Review by John Mullarkey, youth services library assistant at the Hillsborough Library
This is an early reader chapter book and series by Cyntia Rylant and Arthur Howard done in a picture book format by the same team who wrote and illustrated the popular “Poppleton” series and “Mr. Putter & Tabby” series.
The three stories are both funny and clever as they follow the “adventures” of a good-natured, but eccentric moose, named Hornbeam, and his friends (note their pictures posted on a refrigerator in the front and back pages) Eureka - a goose, Cuddy - a cow, and Adorabelle - a skunk. Each story contains a simple “lesson” provided by the characters that young children can relate to: going to a picnic and meeting new people; a sleepover, complete with loud snoring; and reluctantly learning to swim. It is all done with a mix of humor and engaging storytelling revolving around the theme of friendship.
The artwork by Arthur Howard, done with pencil and watercolor, is colorful and fluid and it truly highlights the humorous exchanges between the characters. The larger picture book format is great for reading aloud. It also provides for an introduction to chapter books for the earliest readers.
