Hillsborough Branch Launches StoryWalk®

About Blog Post Aug 4, 2022 by SCLSNJ
As of August 1, 2022, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) Hillsborough branch is prepared to share its first StoryWalk® adventure - an interactive, nature-filled, storybook journey - hosted in partnership with Hillsborough Township Parks and Recreation. "Sharing resources with the Hillsborough branch enables us to offer additional programs for our community," said Parks and Recreation Director Robert Wagner. "We are fortunate here in Hillsborough Township to have such a fantastic working relationship with the Hillsborough branch and look forward to continued collaboration," said Liaison to Recreation Committeeman Robert Britting. The StoryWalk® begins with a path through the Rain Garden outside of the Hillsborough Municipal Building. Then participants are encouraged to read along from one poster board to the next, enjoying and interacting with the featured story, "Those Darn Squirrels" by Adam Rubin. "This ongoing initiative contributes to our widening partnership with Hillsborough Township," said Branch Manager Karen Pifher. "The StoryWalk® book will be changed on a monthly basis, weather permitting. We encourage community members of all ages to stroll through the garden and enjoy this month's librarian-curated selection." Staff from the branch are overjoyed to begin sharing this fantastical, outdoors journey. "The project promotes early literacy, while engaging families in fun physical activity," said Youth Services Librarian Patricia Farmer. "Our new StoryWalk® is an excellent cross-generational activity," said Youth Services Department Supervisor Jessica Fazekas. "It's an innovative and fun way to read an entire book. The StoryWalk® has future plans to pop up at other Township parks." StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition (VBPC) and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. The Hillsborough branch is located at 379 South Branch Road in Hillsborough. For questions, email hillsborough@sclibnj.org or call (908) 458-8420.
