Get Healthy, Get Moving With Your Library and Somerset County 4-H

About Blog Post Nov 19, 2019 by Pressroom
According to a 2018 study from State of Obesity, New Jersey has the 28th highest obesity rate for youth ages 10-17 in the United States. In partnership with Somerset County 4-H Association, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) will host a program series this winter that promotes healthy habits for children in grades K-4.  “If children learn at a young age to make healthy nutritional choices and engage in regular physical activity, that could make a lasting impact on their health and future lifestyle,” said Jennifer Korneski, healthy living program coordinator of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Somerset County. Korneski will share information about healthy lifestyle choices with program attendees through hands-on activities. Children will have the opportunity to discover exercises to keep active and healthy; explore projects that aim to help them make food choices using MyPlate, the nutrition guide from the USDA; and more.  “SCLSNJ is excited to partner with organizations like Somerset County 4-H to help children discover an understanding of healthy lifestyle choices,” said Karen Pifher, manager of branch services, young minds and family resources. “It is one of our core services to connect our community members to programs that promote lifelong learning.” “Library programs are a great place for children and their parents to learn about community resources and have exposure to all types of educational programs to not only develop a love of reading but developing life skills to last a lifetime,” said Korneski.
