For Kids and Their Grown-Ups
“Tiny Troubles: Nelli’s Purpose” by Sophie Diao
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
Nelli and Worthi are best friends. They also happen to be two tiny succulents. One day in the forest, Nelli asks Worthi some big questions about life. While Worthi doesn’t have the exact answer, he believes they can find it in the forest. And soon these two plant pals go on a hilarious and thought-provoking quest where they encounter a magical frog, a wise stink bug and a trusty snail sidekick in hopes of finding Nelli’s purpose.
This is Sophie Diao’s picture book debut as an author and illustrator, and it is a pure delight. I expect many readers to chuckle at and contemplate the discoveries these pals make along the way. The book serves as a natural conversation starter about the themes of friendship, kindness and curiosity and should lead to rich discussions about some of life’s bigger questions. I hope we see more adventures from this dynamic duo.
