For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “The Spice Box” by Meera Sriram; illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian Rishi is enthralled by the beautiful, hand-carved box at his house. It is filled with spices that unlock many family memories. It tells the story of his grandmother and her dreams of becoming a chef when few women were allowed to work. She passes it on to his dad when he leaves to study and pursue his dreams. Rishi loves that box so much. And is beyond devastated when he accidentally breaks it – sending a swirl of spices all over. With a bit of help from dad, he is able to make things all better again. This is a heartwarming story that works on many different levels. It is a story of family, of forging new beginnings, of fathers and sons, of food, and of long-standing traditions. Meera Sriram’s words and Sandhya Prabhat’s illustrations perfectly flow to create a stunning visual experience that bursts with color and awakens all the senses. The picture book concludes with the history of Indian spice boxes and a potato curry recipe. Readers will savor this story.
