For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Sari-Sari Summers” by Lynnor Bontigao
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
Nora loves spending the summer with her Lola (grandmother) in the Philippines. And this year, she is big enough to help Lola at the Sari-Sari store. The store is filled with all kinds of goodies, and outside the store stands a mango tree Lola and Nora planted. When a heat wave hits and no customers come in, Nora starts to worry. Maybe Lola won’t need her and they won’t get to spend the rest of the summer together. While taking a break under the mango tree, Nora comes up with a sweet idea to beat the heat and get the customers back in the Sari-Sari store.
This heartwarming tale by Lynnor Bontigao will resonate with many generations who fondly remember spending summers with a grandparent and all the cherished memories from that time. The illustrations are wonderful and full of life – they really give the reader a sense of the sights, sounds and smells of the Philippines. A delightful summertime read.
