For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Pie-Rats!” by Lisa Frenkel Riddiough; illustrated by David Mottram Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian The story of swashbucklers is a popular topic in the world of picture books. Author Lisa Frenkel Riddiough has come up with a whole new spin. These are not your ordinary pirates, in fact they are pie-rats! And these furry creatures are on the lookout for one specific treasure – dessert. They dream of pies in all their various forms. But will their dreams be dashed by fierce storms and rival scallywags?  Readers, particularly those with a sweet tooth, will delight in the descriptive passages and rhyming text. The illustrations are mouth watering. This picture book is a real treat, but maybe don’t read on an empty stomach.
