For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Lupe Lopez Reading Rock Star!” by e.E. Charlton-Trujillo and Pat Zietlow Miller; illustrated by Joe Cepeda
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
In kindergarten, Lupe Lopez started a band and became a rock star. Now she is in first grade and ready to take her fame to the next level. She has her sights on becoming a Reading Rock Star. They tell the best stories, carry the coolest books and score the shiniest stars on the Wall of Fame. But when she is placed in a group for struggling readers and teased by a rival, Lupe becomes deflated and starts to doubt herself. With encouraging words from her teacher and bandmates, she taps into her musicality to help her achieve her goal: becoming a Reading Rock Star.
Lupe’s story will resonate with many kids who face their own reading struggles. Readers should thoroughly enjoy the book’s vibrant illustrations, lively text and memorable heroine. Summer is a perfect time to share Lupe’s story, especially as libraries like SCLSNJ celebrate and encourage families to join us for a Summer Reading Challenge.
