For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: “Box of Dreams” by Faith Kazmi; illustrated by Christine Almeda
Review by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
A young girl and her mother pack up a big box to send to family in the Philippines. This box is special. It is a balikbayan box that is filled with treasures. The box keeps families connected when they are far apart. As they work together to fill the box, the young girl hears stories about her mother’s childhood in the Philippines and dreams of the day when she can go and meet all her relatives.
“Box of Dreams” perfectly captures the bonds of family as we see mother and daughter working together and sharing stories while keeping those who are far away close in their heart. This is a joyful celebration of family, of place, of blessings, and of sacrifice. Author Faith Kazmi creates a heartwarming tale and shares her own personal experiences in a note at the end. Christine Almeda’s colorful and expressive illustrations are enchanting and give the picture book a real magical feel.
