For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: 2024 Garden State Children's Book Awards
Created by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian
It’s awards season for films, music and books. We have the Golden Globes, the Grammys, the Oscars, the Caldecott, the Newbery, etc. And another one to add to this coveted collection of prize winners is New Jersey’s own Garden State Children's Book Awards. IYKYK, but if you don’t … the Garden State Children’s Book Awards, established in 1977, honors books for elementary school readers.
The winners are chosen by a committee of the Children's Services Section of the New Jersey Library Association on the basis of literary merit and popularity with readers. The awards are given to both author and illustrator in four categories: Early Reader, Fiction, Graphic Novel, and Nonfiction. Because children vote for their favorite books, the committee works with titles published three years before the award. This year’s winners are:
Early Readers: “Unlimited Squirrels in Guess What!?” by Mo Willems
Fiction: “Pax: Journey Home” by Sara Pennypacker; illustrated by Jon Klassen
Graphic Novel: “Sunny Makes a Splash” by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm
Nonfiction: “Battle of the Butts: The Science Behind Animals Behinds” by Jocelyn Rish; illustrated by David Creighton-Pester
