For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: 2024 Awards and Honors Created by Laura Frantz, collection development librarian The American Library Association revealed the winners of its annual Youth Media Awards, including the Newbery and Caldecott. The awards are selected by committees composed of librarians and other experts in literature and media and recognize the top picks in children’s and teen literature.  The Ralph Caldecott Medal is given to the most distinguished American picture book for children. This year’s recipient is “Big” written and illustrated by Vashti Harrison. Books recognized with Caldecott honors are “In Every Life,” “Jovita Wore Pants: The Story of a Mexican Freedom Fighter,” “There Was a Party for Langston,” and “The Truth About Dragons.” The John Newbery Medal is given to the most distinguished children's book. This year’s winner is “The Eyes and the Impossible” by Dave Eggers. Books recognized with Newbery honors are “Eagle Drums,” “Elf Dog and Owl Head,” “Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir,” “Simon Sort of Says,” and “The Many Assassinations of Samir, the Seller of Dreams.” We will highlight additional winners in our blog!
