“First Lie Wins” by Ashley Elston
Review by by Yvonne Selander, collection development librarian
Evie Porter is moving in today with her boyfriend Ryan to his home in the suburbs. All seems well with this lovely domestic scenario. Except Evie just rented her apartment a week ago. Her “belongings” were all recently purchased from Goodwill. And Evie Porter doesn’t exist. “Evie” is in the employ of Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith wants information about Ryan and his not-quite-legal business dealings. Mr. Smith’s identity is a secret but one that Evie wants to discover because she’s enjoying her life with Ryan and realizing that she may not want to be a different person every few months. But can she simply quit? Or does she need to create a web of lies to protect herself and the life she wants back?
The holds lists for this one are LONG thanks to Reese Witherspoon’s book group but I have to admit Reese has hit it out of the park again. While I wouldn’t recommend it for a book discussion group, because what do you talk about? – Can you BELIEVE what happened? Did you guess —? – it is a super psychological thriller. Those who want a book they can’t put down need to put themselves on the list for this one.
