According to Microsoft “65 percent of future jobs don’t exist yet. This means the essential skills kids need for their future are not being taught.” In response to this eventual need, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s (SCLSNJ) Hillsborough Library branch, located at 379 South Branch Road in Hillsborough, will host a Hacking STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) for students in grades 5-8. The event will be held in partnership with Microsoft and book distributor Baker & Taylor on May 18 from 2-3 p.m.
“By partnering with Microsoft and Baker & Taylor, we are able to provide youth access to robotic technology that allows them to discover advanced STEM concepts while exploring what it is like to be an engineer and scientist,” said Chrstine Jansen, SCLSNJ young adult librarian.
Participants will have the opportunity to investigate the role of electrical and mechanical engineers by studying the anatomy and biomechanics of the human hand and building a robotic finger sensor.
