Book review by Amy Atzert, collection development librarian
Maria Callas was one of the world’s greatest opera singers. Her voice was unmistakable, her flair untouchable. She worked tirelessly at a young age to develop that golden voice. Maria felt the constant push of her mother’s expectations to shine on stage, but she longed for the genuine love a mother should have for her daughter.
Fame and admiration came, but it is only when she meets shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis she finds a missing piece of her life. Her one true love. Aristotle was the first person to see Maria because of the person she was, not the music she created. Their romance was filled with passion and adventure. Their shared Greek heritage made Maria almost certain she would one day be Onassis’ wife. A love that was nearly unbreakable only to be extinguished by his marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy. That news was like a bomb blowing up Maria’s heart. How will she go on without him?
A complicated love story is what I encountered here. Goodwin succeeds in showing the personal side of Maria Callas. The strong yet vulnerable woman inside the great Diva. Her challenges, fears, and successes are all exposed. The loss of her one great love leads to a discovery she wasn't expecting. One that would bring her success in a different way. Opera fans will enjoy the details about Callas’ career through the 1950s and 1960s. Not an opera fan? No worries. There is enough passion and drama to be enjoyed by the non opera lover too.
