The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) Bridgewater branch celebrated Earth Day with over 90 participants during their recent disabilities social hour.
"I think the customers who come to the Bridgewater branch’s social hours feel the efforts our staff members have put into this program and appreciate it," said Jungwon DeVone, special populations department supervisor. "I believe we certainly have created a safe gathering space for adults with disabilities to connect with others, share positive lifelong learning experiences, and have fun."
During the one-hour social hour event held on April 18, participants decorated flower pots, were provided flower seeds to plant at home, and collectively explored how to support the Earth's environment.
Continued DeVone, "From my previous librarianship in a special hospital, I have learned that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be stimulated by everything in their environment: by the sounds, by the interactions, and even by the smiles from others. For this reason, I have used several approaches to stimulate and intrigue our customers during social hours: a movie discussion, a small-scale carnival, presenting a short play based on a picture book, games utilizing custom-made sensory boxes, and so forth."
Disabilities social hours are hosted at several locations throughout the Library System. To learn more or register, visit https://sclsnj.libnet.info/events.
