According to The Journal of Neuropsychiatry, adult crafting may offer a reduction in the chance for developing mild cognitive impairment by 30% to 50% and offer a natural form of decompression. The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) Montgomery branch is planning multiple adult-centric craft programs in response.
"Part of our mission at SCLSNJ is to provide programs that help community members connect with their neighbors, explore existing interests, and discover new hobbies," said Manny Miracle, adult services department supervisor.
On Tuesday, October 4 at 6 p.m., Kate Bowden, adult services library assistant, will be hosting a spooky - but not too spooky! - no-sew pillow craft. On Thursday, October 14 at 2 p.m., Manny Miracle, adult services department supervisor, will additionally be hosting a fiber-arts fall leaf craft at the branch.
"I find that adult crafts allow for unearthed passions to be known no matter your age," said Bowden. "Libraries are able to provide activities that customers would never find themselves. Plus, adult crafts can be more complex - in a fun way! You are not just coloring in a page and gluing it together, but rather following multiple steps on how to create something extraordinary."
If you are unable to attend the programs, try crafting at home using a book from the Library's collections. Explore these librarian-curated, halloween-themed reads: "Glitterville's Handmade Halloween: A Glittered Guide for Whimsical Crafting" by Stephen Brown, "A Ghastly-Good Halloween" by Gooseberry Patch, "Felt-o-Ween: 40 Scary-Cute Projects to Celebrate Halloween" by Kathy Sheldon, "Spooky & Bright: 101 Halloween Ideas" by the editors of Country Living, "Creepy Cross-Stitch: 25 Spooky Projects to Haunt Your Halls" by Lindsay Swearingen, and more.
