Community Groups Partner to Bring Special Documentary to Local Library

Organizations come together to work toward ‘trauma informed Somerset County’

(Somerset County, NJ: January 5, 2017) On February 2 at 6:30 p.m., Children’s Hope Initiative, the Somerville Public Schools and CASA SHaW (Court-Appointed Special Advocates, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties) will join forces to present a screening of James Redford’s documentary “Paper Tigers” at Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s Hillsborough Library branch, located at 379 S. Branch Road in Hillsborough. "The science is clear - we can and should do a better job of helping traumatized children learn to manage their emotions rather than punish them for behaviors that are sometimes out their control,” said Tracey Heisler, CASA of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren executive director. “I'm so pleased for the opportunity to share this vital information with members of the public.” Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, becoming a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families. “Stressed brains can’t learn.” That was the nugget of neuroscience that Jim Sporleder, principal of a high school riddled with violence, drugs and truancy, took away from an educational conference in 2010. Three years later, the number of fights at Lincoln Alternative High School had gone down by 75% and the graduation rate had increased five-fold.
