Coffee Time Talks Coming to Local Libraries This Spring
Five SCLSNJ library branches will host program series featuring local authors and experts
(Somerset County, NJ: March 8, 2017) Somerset County Library System of New Jersey will launch a new Coffee Time Talks educational program series for adults this April. “The premise of our new Coffee Time Talks series is to provide talks on three main topics: technology, health and wellness, and humanities,” said Marcela Dunham, system programming coordinator at SCLSNJ. “We have excellent speakers, including local authors and experts in their fields, who will present one-hour talks on a variety of topics in these categories: from JFK to preventing falls, from safely searching the internet to hearing loss. The programs include time for questions, socializing, and more. Our libraries are sources of lifelong learning for our community; they’re places to connect, share, explore, and discover. We created this series to offer more opportunities to do just that.” All programs are held 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be provided, however, participants are welcome to bring lunch. Registration is required. Tech Travel Tips, Best Travel Apps, and Great Travel Gadgets April 12 SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch, located at 42 Mountain Boulevard in Warren Abby Stokes, author of “Is This Thing On?,” will discuss precautions you should take to avoid a smartphone bill that’ll ruin your vacation after-glow, as well as great apps for smartphones and tablets to help plan, navigate, and enjoy your trip. Relax & Recharge: Seated Yoga April 24 SCLSNJ’s Bridgewater Library branch, located at 1 Vogt Drive in Bridgewater Certified yoga instructor Jillian Keller will lead a class which will include seated stretches, breathing exercises, and guided relaxation. Censorship in the Golden Age of Hollywood April 25 SCLSNJ’s Manville Library branch, located at 100 South 10th Avenue in Manville Mystery author Sheila York from the NY Chapter of Mystery Writers of America will examine censorship during the Golden Age of Hollywood with a light touch, some audience participation, a few brief film clips, and stories about what the public was not allowed to see in the movies as a result of the Production Code. How To Safely Surf The Internet And Find (Almost) Anything Online May 2 SCLSNJ’s Manville Library branch, located at 100 South 10th Avenue in Manville Abby Stokes, author of “Is This Thing On?,” will cover how to create a memorable, safe, and unique password, how to get the most out of online searches, how to safely shop and bank online, and recommendations for websites for travel, health, finance, and more. Josephine: The Empress Gardened May 10 SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch, located at 42 Mountain Boulevard in Warren| Garden historian, Lesley Parness, will present a tribute to the life of Empress Josephine and her role in the green history of the world. John F. Kennedy: Life, Legend, and Legacy May 15 SCLSNJ’s Manville Library branch, located at 100 South 10th Avenue in Manville Mark the 100th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s birth with a talk by history professor and author Perry Leavell. Preventing Falls: A Delicate Balance May 18 SCLSNJ’s Hillsborough Library branch, located at 379 South Branch Road in Hillsborough Laura Mellor, owner of Pathfinder Health Coach and Advocate LLC, will present this lecture and hands-on training to address how to prevent falls and will share simple exercises to do at home to strengthen the lower body to improve and maintain balance. Magical Destinations of New Jersey and Beyond June 7 SCLSNJ’s Mary Jacobs Memorial Library branch, located at 64 Washington Street in Rocky Hill Local author Natalie Zaman will take you on a tour of New Jersey's magical destinations. Discover nearby history and houses of worship, folklore and natural wonders, museums and events--many free. Navigating Hearing Loss and Tinnitus June 14 SCLSNJ’s Warren Township Library branch, located at 42 Mountain Boulevard in Warren Dr. Susan Woods, from Speech & Hearing Associates, will present an informative discussion on hearing, hearing loss, and hearing aids. Topics will include: how we hear, causes of hearing loss, tinnitus, how to control your listening environment for easier listening, and how hearing aids can help someone with hearing loss. Apps for Just About Everything June 19 SCLSNJ’s Bridgewater Library branch, located at 1 Vogt Drive in Bridgewater Tech guru and author Abby Stokes will teach you how to make technology easy and accessible and will share her favorite apps for travel, news, health, and more.
