Nanette "Nan" Peterson, the cherished and long-serving Branch Manager of Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s Manville branch, retired effective May 1, 2025, marking a significant leadership transition for the branch. Following Nan's departure, Crystal Hooper, a proven leader within SCLSNJ, has been appointed as the new Branch Manager for the Manville location.
Nanette Peterson leaves behind a remarkable legacy of dedication and community engagement. She began her tenure with the library system in 2001 as a part time Librarian and served in a variety of roles within the system before stepping in as an interim Branch Manager in Manville. Her exceptional work led to her official appointment to the position in 2015. Over the years, Nan became deeply ingrained in the fabric of Manville, fostering strong partnerships with local schools and the borough, and becoming a beloved presence in the community. Her impact was so profound that the branch was affectionately known by some as "Nanville."
"Nan's commitment to the Manville community has been truly extraordinary," said Brian Auger, SCLSNJ Library Director. "She has not only provided invaluable library services but has also built a vibrant community space where residents feel welcome and connected. We are immensely grateful for her years of service and wish her a fulfilling retirement."
Succeeding Nan is Crystal Hooper, who brings a wealth of experience and a keen eye for efficiency to her new role. Crystal has risen through the ranks within the SCLSNJ system, demonstrating her versatility and leadership capabilities across various departments. She began her journey in 2016 as a part-time Library Assistant at the circulation desk in North Plainfield, later becoming the Circulation Supervisor at Somerville. Her career continued to evolve as she took charge of the transit room and worked in Digital Services before ultimately serving as the Branch Manager at the North Plainfield branch. Crystal is particularly recognized for her exceptional ability to organize complex projects and implement streamlined workflows, ensuring smooth and effective library operations.
"Crystal has consistently demonstrated an impressive aptitude for creating effective systems and leading teams," added Auger.
