2024 Award Winning Nonfiction for Teens
Created by Linda Tripp, collection development librarian
The American Library Association recently revealed the winners of its annual Youth Media Awards, including nonfiction books for teens selected by members of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA.) “Accountable: The True Story of a Racist Social Media Account and the Teenagers Whose Lives It Changed” by Dashka Slater was selected as the winner of the 2024 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults. Slater recounts the thought-provoking true story about the revelation of a racist social media account that changes everything for a group of high school students. In it, she explores the real world consequences of online choices and asks the reader to consider: Where does accountability end for online speech that harms? And what does accountability even mean?
Four other books were finalists for the award:
- “America Redux: Visual Stories From Our Dynamic History” by Ariel Aberg-Riger
- “Family Style: Memories of an American From Vietnam” by Thien Pham
- “From Here” by Luma Mufleh
- “Nearer My Freedom: The Interesting Life of Olaudah Equiano by Himself” by Monica Edinger and Lesley Younge
