For Kids and Their Grown-Ups: 2024 Children’s Nonfiction Awards and Honors
Created by Linda Tripp, collection development librarian
The American Library Association recently revealed the winners of its annual Youth Media Awards, including the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award for most distinguished informational book for children. The 2024 Sibert winner is “The Mona Lisa Vanishes: A Legendary Painter, a Shocking Heist, and the Birth of a Global Celebrity” by Nicholas Day and illustrated by Brett Helquist. This fascinating story of La Joconde, from its creation by Leonardo da Vinci to its little-known 1911 theft and recovery several years later is related by Day and accompanied by Helquist’s amusing illustrations. The painting emerged from the resulting limelight to become a lasting pop-culture icon and arguably the most famous portrait in the world.
Four Sibert Honor Books were named:
- “The Book of Turtles” by Sy Montgomery; illustrated by Matt Patterson
- “Holding Her Own: The Exceptional Life of Jackie Ormes” by Traci N. Todd; illustrated by Shannon Wright
- “Jumper: A Day in the Life of the Backyard Jumping Spider” by Jessica Lanan
- “Shipwrecked!: Diving for Hidden Time Capsules on the Ocean Floor” by Martin W. Sandler
