Papel picado, also known as "punched paper", is a folk art tradition most popular in Mexico and the United States. Papel picado is most commonly associated with Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. These delicate strings of paper are a tradition that is typically linked with Mexican celebrations and/or rituals. During Dia de Los muertos, families typically create an altar to honor their loved ones, and papel picado is used to adorn these altars.
