Somerset County Library System of New Jersey to Host Countywide Bee Spectacular Scripps Spelling Bee For Third Year

On March 10 from 2-6 p.m., the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) will host their 3rd Annual Spelling Bee Spectacular, for children up to eighth grade, at the Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School, located at 14 Vogt Drive in Bridgewater. “The Bee is a great way to connect the community and to underscore the Library’s commitment to education and literacy,” said Brian K. Auger, county library administrator. The winner of SCLSNJ’s Bee Spectacular will be eligible to attend the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. at the Library System’s expense. Additional prizes will be awarded including a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online. “The Bee is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the achievements of our students throughout Somerset County,” said Jessica Trujillo, youth services manager. “We have a mix of private, homeschool, and public school students participating in our Spelling Bee. Each year we gain new participating schools and have grown from the 19 during our inaugural year to this year's 33. Our goal is to have all Somerset County elementary and middle schools participating in the Spelling Bee Spectacular.” “The Spelling Bee truly creates a buzz in our schools,” said Lisa Romano, language arts and social studies supervisor at the Montgomery Upper Middle School and Montgomery Lower Middle School. “Those students who choose to participate in the bees begin talking with one another about words. It is fun to hear their conversations. Once the preliminary round is complete, we create a Google Classroom comprised of the top 10 finalists as a vehicle to support communication and share study resources. In the classroom, students support one another during and even after the school’s final competition. The Spelling Bee helps to cultivate a love of learning within a community that fosters resilience and team effort.” SCLSNJ is delighted to announce the following students who will be participating in the 3rd Annual SCLSNJ Bee Spectacular (information appears as placard number for spelling bee, child’s first name, child’s last name, child’s grade, school child attends, location of school):

“The new Scripps book, ‘Lunchbox Words: 65 Word-Based Notes to Pack in Your Speller's Lunchbox or Backpack’ by Tracey West, is a fun approach to learning new spelling and vocabulary skills,” said Beth Bouwman, SCLSNJ’s youth services librarian. “Each word comes with a definition, part of speech, pronunciation guide, definition, and brief explanation of the word with spelling tips. This factual information is paired with illustrations, jokes, and quotes from notable figures. I especially love the clever format of the book. Each page has a note on the front and the information about the word on the back. This way you can actually tear the page out of the book and place it directly in your child's lunchbox. It's also easy to use the book as inspiration for your own personalized notes while keeping the book intact, which is definitely the way to go if you use a library copy!” Emcee for the evening will be Mike Kerwin; Somerset County Business Partnership President and CEO. Pronouncer will be Brian K. Auger; SCLSNJ county library administrator. Judges for the evening will be:
