One-on-One Literacy Classes Hosted at our Bound Brook branch

About Blog Post Mar 2, 2022 by SCLSNJ
The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey's (SCLSNJ) Bound Brook branch recently acquired a new online learning tool called Leamos. This product helps in teaching Spanish-speaking residents with little formative education to improve their literacy skills. Studies show that it is easier to learn to read, write, and speak English if you are literate in your first language. Every week, Adult Services Library Assistant, Mabelle Riquelme, guides four Bound Brook residents through the process of learning to read and write in Spanish using this new product. "The Library continues to be a lifeline for English language learners and their families," said Cathy DeBerry, branch manager. "SCLSNJ's libraries provide support to immigrants in a variety of ways, including hosting free classes sponsored by community partners like LVSC and Hunterdon County Education Services Commission, by offering homework help, by providing job seeking support, by producing and offering bilingual programming, and so much more. Teaching Spanish speakers how to read and write in Spanish, with the ultimate goal of learning English, is just another way that we continue to support new Americans." Customers are able to gain literacy skills from week to week, and with Riquelme's encouragement and direction, participants have already voiced excitement in the improvement of their skills. The Bound Brook branch is located at 402 East High Street in Bound Brook. To learn more about this program, email boundbrook@sclibnj.org.
