Fake News and You: Discovering the Truth Hidden Within Your Newsfeed

Explore the concept of fake news with the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) this winter. “Given the ongoing debate and discussion over fake news, the rise of digital news, and the library's mission to foster information literacy, SCLSNJ is offering a series of programs designed to promote information literacy, to teach information evaluation skills, and to explore the psychology behind fake news,” said Cathy DeBerry, adult services supervisor at SCLSNJ’s Hillsborough Library branch. “Included in the series is a librarian-curated bibliography of resources for those patrons who would like to delve deeper into the topic. Alongside the bibliography is a quiz challenging patrons to determine if a news event is fake news or not.” These programs are intended for an adult audience and will be presented in an educational environment requiring polite, non-political discussion. Using the First Amendment to Combat Fake News Explore the movie “Good Night, and Good Luck,” followed by a discussion about the McCarthy Era and the importance of a free press to combat fake news and protect democracy. - October 29, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at SCLSNJ’s Hillsborough Library branch Why Do People Respond to Fake News? Discover the psychology behind people’s belief systems with ethical strategist Karen Tibbals. - November 28, 7-8:30 p.m. at SCLSNJ’s Warren Twp. Library branch Who Says So? The Challenge of Fake News in the Digital Age Learn where information comes from, who produces it, and how it affects individuals with Professor Diane K. Campbell from Rider University. - December 8, 2-3 p.m. at SCLSNJ’s Bridgewater Library branch Registration is requested.
